How to Ask for Your Pending Salary on WhatsApp: 7 Scripts for Pay That Has Not Arrived
The Short Answer
Send one short, factual message on the first working day after payday, to the person who actually controls the payment, and ask for one thing: a date.
Do not open with "sorry to bother you", do not explain what you need the money for, and do not hint. Asking for pay you have already earned is not a favour, and a message that apologises for asking invites a reply that treats it as optional. Give it two or three working days, then follow up once, naming the date of your first message. If a second payday passes with no date, move the conversation off WhatsApp onto email, because by then you need a record rather than a chat.
The chase is what gets paid, and the chase is what people forget. Set the check for the morning after they promised it, so the next message writes itself.
“Remind me on Monday at 10am to check the salary was credited”Seven Messages You Can Copy
Change the bracketed parts and send. One message each time, not a run of one-liners.
1. Day one, the neutral check. Assume an administrative delay, because most of the time that is what it is. Nothing in this message accuses anybody of anything.
2. Day three, no reply. Name the earlier message. That single clause turns a repeated question into a record.
3. To HR or accounts, when your manager has no answer. Give them everything they need to look it up, so the reply is a date rather than a request for details.
4. When only part of it arrived. A partial credit is the one case where you should ask for a breakdown in the same message, because unexplained deductions get harder to unpick the longer they sit.
5. Freelance or contract, where it is an invoice rather than a payroll run. Different relationship, different lever: you have a document with a due date on it, so quote it.
If that is your situation rather than a payroll one, the full chase, including what statutory late-payment interest you can actually claim, is in following up on an unpaid invoice.
6. Second month, moving it into writing. Say that you are moving channel and why, in one sentence, with no threat in it.
7. The last WhatsApp message before you escalate. Specific, dated, and still offering the easy way out. Escalation that arrives as a surprise usually costs you the relationship without speeding up the payment.
The Five Things Every One of These Carries
- The period, not "my salary". "The October salary" can be checked against a payroll run. "My salary" cannot, and it is the version that gets a vague answer.
- The date it was due, and how you know. Your payslip, your contract, or simply the date it has arrived on every other month. One clause is enough: "the usual date is the 1st".
- One ask, and make it a date. Not "please look into it", which can be answered with "yes". A date can be met or missed, and a missed date is the thing your next message is about.
- No justification of why you need it. "My rent is due" invites an opinion about your finances. "The salary is 11 days late" does not. The money is already yours; the lateness is the only subject.
- A trail you can read back. Keep the thread, do not delete anything, and from the second ask onwards put the same words in an email. A timestamped "I asked on 3 November" is worth more than any amount of politeness.
One more thing that is not a field: send it to a person, never to the office group. A salary question in a group chat embarrasses whoever has to answer it, and an embarrassed person answers slowly.
When to Send Which
The most common mistake is not being rude. It is going quiet for three weeks and then arriving angry. A chase works when it is boring, regular and documented.
- First working day after payday: message 1. Neutral, assumes a delay.
- Day three or four: message 2, naming the first message.
- End of week one: message 3, to HR or accounts rather than your manager, since by now it is a payroll question and not a management one.
- Once a week after that: one message, same thread, same tone. Daily messages make you easy to mute. Silence makes you easy to forget.
- Around the next payday: message 6. Two missed paydays is the point where the chat stops being the right venue.
- Six to eight weeks: message 7, then the formal route.
Dates said out loud are the ones that get kept. When somebody tells you "by Friday", the useful reply is to write Friday down somewhere that will come back to you on Friday, because the week after a promised date is exactly when the thread goes quiet again.
What the Rules Actually Say About Being Paid Late
You do not need to cite a statute in a WhatsApp message, and quoting one in message 1 reads as a threat. It is still worth knowing where you stand before message 6, because "it is late" lands differently when you know by how much.
India. The timing rule now sits in the Code on Wages, 2019. Section 17 sets the deadline by pay cycle: for a monthly wage period, wages must be paid before the expiry of the seventh day of the following month, and where someone is removed, dismissed, retrenched or resigns, the wages are payable within two working days (the text of section 17; a compliance summary of the same chapter reads it the same way). The four labour codes were brought into operation from 21 November 2025, although the Wages Code commenced only in part and the central rules followed later, so exactly which provisions bind a particular establishment depends on the notified sections and the state rules (King Stubb and Kasiva, DLA Piper). The practical point for your message: after the seventh, "it is late" is a statement of fact rather than an opinion.
United Kingdom. Wages you are owed and have not been paid are treated as an unlawful deduction from wages under the Employment Rights Act 1996, and the window to bring a tribunal claim is short: three months less one day from the date of the deduction, with the clock pausing while Acas early conciliation runs (didlaw, Rollits). Both sources make the same point about the trap: starting conciliation after the deadline has already gone does not revive it. If you are in the UK and the money is months old, the clock matters more than the wording of your next message.
Everywhere else, and the honest caveat. We are not lawyers, and this is general information rather than advice about your contract. Deadlines, notice rules and escalation routes differ by country and often by state, and your employment contract can be stricter than the law. Use the above to know roughly where you stand, then check the current official guidance for your country before you escalate.
The Chase Is the Part That Gets Paid
Almost nobody loses a pending salary by writing the wrong message. They lose it by sending message 1, getting "we will check", and then noticing three weeks later that nothing happened. The gap between the promise and the next question is where the money goes missing.
That gap is a date, which makes it the kind of thing to hand to a reminder rather than to your memory in a month when you are already annoyed. If your reminders live in WhatsApp, it is the same app you were just typing in:
The second one matters more than it looks. A weekly reminder turns an awkward decision you have to make again every few days into something that simply arrives, which is why the people who get paid are usually the ones who asked on a schedule rather than the ones who asked most forcefully.
If You Would Rather Not Keep the Dates in Your Head
NagMeLater is a WhatsApp contact. You send it "remind me on Monday at 10am to check the salary was credited" and it comes back as a message you can answer with one word. You send it "note HR said by 12 November" and the line is there when you need it six weeks later. No app to install, no account, nothing new to open. The first 7 days are free and unlimited, then it is a monthly plan or a one-time lifetime plan.
If the chase is going to run for weeks, a recurring reminder covers the whole series in one sentence, and what you were told and when belongs in a note rather than in your memory. The related conversations have their own scripts: the polite nudge for the general case, and asking about a raise for the conversation you have once this one is settled, which is not the same conversation and should not be in the same thread.
No app, no account. Save the number, send a message, done.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I politely ask for my pending salary on WhatsApp?
Keep it factual and ask for a date. 'Hi Anita, the October salary has not been credited as of this morning. The usual date is the 1st. Could you let me know when it is being processed?' is polite and complete. Politeness here is about tone, not about softening the ask: do not apologise for asking, and do not explain what you need the money for, because both turn a payment that is owed into something that sounds negotiable.
Is it okay to ask about salary on WhatsApp instead of email?
For the first one or two messages, yes, in most workplaces where WhatsApp is already how you talk to your manager. It is fast and it usually gets an answer. Once you are past the second ask, or once a promised date has been missed, send the same words by email as well. Not because WhatsApp is unprofessional, but because you want the question somewhere you can forward it without screenshots.
How long should I wait before following up about unpaid salary?
Two to three working days after the first message, then roughly once a week. Daily messages get muted and three weeks of silence gets forgotten, so a boring weekly rhythm is what works. Set the follow-up as a reminder when you send the first message, because the week after a promised date is exactly when most people stop chasing.
When is salary legally due in India?
Under section 17 of the Code on Wages, 2019, wages for a monthly wage period must be paid before the expiry of the seventh day of the following month, and wages owed to someone who is removed, dismissed, retrenched or resigns are payable within two working days. The four labour codes were brought into operation from 21 November 2025, though the Wages Code commenced only in part, so which provisions apply to a particular establishment depends on the notified sections and the state rules.
What can I do in the UK if my employer has not paid me?
Unpaid wages are treated as an unlawful deduction from wages under the Employment Rights Act 1996, and the time limit for an employment tribunal claim is three months less one day from the date of the deduction, with the clock paused while Acas early conciliation runs. The trap is that starting conciliation after the deadline has already passed does not revive it, so if the money is months old, check the dates before you spend another month chasing.
Should I ask about my salary in the office group chat?
No. Send it to your manager, HR or accounts directly. A salary question in a group puts whoever has to answer it on the spot in front of everyone, and an embarrassed person answers slowly or not at all. It also buries your own record of the ask in a thread full of other traffic.
What do I do if nobody replies at all?
Treat silence as your answer and change channel rather than volume. Put the same question in an email to your manager and to HR or accounts together, keep the sent copy, and give a specific date by which you need a reply. If two paydays have passed with no date, the next step is the formal route for your country, which in India usually means the labour department and in the UK means Acas and the tribunal time limit above.
