The Short Answer

Partly. WhatsApp can schedule a reminder in two narrow cases, and cannot do the thing most people mean. Long-press any message, tap More, then Remind Me, and pick 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours or a custom time: the nudge is private and attached to that message. You can also create an Event in a one-to-one or group chat and set a custom early reminder for the people invited. What WhatsApp cannot do by itself is take a sentence like "remind me every Monday at 9am to send the invoice" and deliver it on time, every week. There is no recurring option, no plain-language input, and nothing to attach a reminder to if the thing you must remember was never a message. WhatsApp's own Scheduled Messages feature has been in development since February 2026 and has still not shipped as of October 5, 2026. The route that works today is a reminder bot on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

The Two Scheduled Reminders WhatsApp Really Has

1. Remind Me, on a message

This is the one most people find. Open a chat, long-press the message you need to come back to, tap More, then Remind Me, and choose 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, or a custom time. A small bell appears on the message bubble, and at the chosen time you get a notification that takes you back to it. MacRumors' walkthrough has the taps in order; the feature was first spotted in a beta build in July 2025 and reported at the time by iDownloadBlog and Business Today. Two things to know: it is private, so nobody else in the chat is told you set it, and to remove it you long-press the message again and tap the bell. We cover the rollout and the gaps in detail in the Remind Me explainer.

2. Early reminders on an Event

Events are the part people miss. WhatsApp says that when you "create and send an event in your group chat you can set custom early reminders for your invitees", and that guests who said they are going "will get an automatic notification when it's getting close" (WhatsApp Blog). Events are no longer group-only: WhatsApp's feature roundup says you can create one in a 1:1 conversation too, with an end date and time for longer events, a "maybe" response, a plus one, and the option to pin the event in the chat. Respond "Going", "Going with guest" or "Maybe" and you also get notified if the creator edits or cancels it (WhatsApp FAQ).

So a dinner on Saturday at 8, with a nudge an hour before for everyone coming, is a native WhatsApp reminder. A recurring nudge to take your medicine at 9pm is not.

And one that is not a reminder at all

You can message yourself: your own name appears in the new-chat list, the chat works like any other, and it is end-to-end encrypted. It is a good notepad and it is free. It will never notify you at a particular time, which is the whole problem.

Scheduled Messages: Still Not Shipped (Checked October 5, 2026)

The feature people often mean by "scheduled" is a send-later button: write the message now, WhatsApp delivers it at the time you choose. WABetaInfo found it under development in early 2026, and the same builds were reported by 9to5Mac on February 23, 2026 and by TechRepublic: a message composed now, queued in the chat, delivered later, with a section for managing or deleting what is queued, in both one-to-one chats and groups.

As of today it is still unreleased. Meta has announced no public release date, and coverage in the months since (for example Stuff and The Hans India) still describes it as in testing rather than live. If your WhatsApp has no send-later option, that is why, and no setting turns it on.

Worth separating the two jobs, because the search results mix them: a scheduled message goes to someone else, a scheduled reminder comes back to you. If you need the first one today, the working routes are in how to schedule a WhatsApp message.

Four Things None of the Native Options Do

  • Repeat. Remind Me is one nudge on one message. An Event reminder fires once, before that event. There is no "every Monday", no "every 1st of the month", no birthday that comes back next year.
  • Start from a sentence. You cannot type what you want and have it understood. You need an existing message to long-press, or an event with a date and a time to fill in.
  • Hold something that was never a message. "Renew the car insurance" is not in any chat, so there is nothing to attach a bell to. The usual workaround is to message yourself and then set Remind Me on that, which covers one nudge and gets old fast.
  • Accept an answer. A native reminder is a notification: you can swipe it away, and nothing changes. There is no "done" that closes it and no "snooze 15" that brings it back, so a reminder you dismissed at a bad moment is simply gone.

How a Reminder Bot Does the Rest

A reminder bot is not a hack layered on your own WhatsApp account. It is a business number on the WhatsApp Business Platform, which is allowed to send you messages, so a reminder is an ordinary incoming WhatsApp message from a contact you saved. That is the whole trick, and it is why there is nothing to install.

Three constraints shape what any such bot can do, and they are worth knowing before you judge one:

  • The 24-hour window. A business may send free-form text only within 24 hours of your last message to it. A reminder set for next Tuesday arrives long after that, so it has to go out on a message template Meta approved in advance. A bot that never got a template approved will quietly fail at exactly the reminders you cared most about.
  • Per-message billing. Since October 1, 2026 Meta charges the business for service messages too, at the same rates as utility messages, with a free tier of 1,000 delivered service messages a month per business phone number and a rate card covering 47 markets (Meta's pricing documentation). Every reminder you receive costs its operator money, which is the single biggest influence on how a bot behaves. We wrote up what that change means when it landed.
  • What a bot is allowed to be. Meta's Terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform (clause 4.7, in force since January 15, 2026) state that providers of "large language models, generative artificial intelligence platforms, general-purpose artificial intelligence assistants, or similar technologies" are "strictly prohibited" from using the WhatsApp Business Platform where such technology is "the primary (rather than incidental or ancillary) functionality being made available for use" (Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform terms), with exceptions in certain countries. A tool with a specific job, such as reminders, is fine. A general chat assistant that happens to set reminders is not, which is why some of them disappeared from WhatsApp this year.

If you are curious about the engineering rather than the product, building a WhatsApp reminder bot in 2026 is the longer version: setup is now almost automated, and everything after the first test message is not.

What a Scheduled Reminder Looks Like in Practice

Here is the case none of the native options reach: a repeating reminder, typed as a sentence, that you can answer.

Your first 7 days are free and unlimited

No app, no account. Save the number, send a message, done.

The same grammar covers daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and every weekday, plus intervals such as every 30 minutes. More examples, including birthdays, are in recurring reminders on WhatsApp.

Which Route for Which Job

  • A message you must come back to today: Remind Me, 2, 8 or 24 hours, or a custom time. Free, private, no bot.
  • A dinner, a call or a trip with a fixed date, shared with other people: an Event in the chat with an early reminder. Free, and everyone invited gets the nudge.
  • A note to yourself with no deadline: message yourself. Free, and it will never remind you.
  • A task that was never a message, or anything that repeats: a reminder bot. This is the gap, and it is the only one that needs a service. Whether a free one will do is answered in is there a free reminder bot on WhatsApp.
  • A message to send to someone else later: nothing native yet. See the scheduling guide for what works today on iPhone, Android and the web.

Nothing here argues you should pay for what WhatsApp already gives you. If a 24-hour nudge on a message is your whole need, you are done, and the answer is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can WhatsApp send scheduled reminders?

Yes, in two cases. You can set a reminder on an existing message (long-press, More, Remind Me) for 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours or a custom time, and you can set custom early reminders on an Event you create in a one-to-one or group chat, which notify the people invited. WhatsApp cannot set a reminder from a typed sentence, cannot repeat a reminder, and cannot remind you about something that is not a message or an event.

Does WhatsApp have recurring reminders?

No. Remind Me fires once on one message, and an Event reminder fires once before that event. There is no daily, weekly, monthly or yearly option anywhere in the app. Recurring reminders on WhatsApp come from a reminder bot on the Business Platform, which can hold a repeating schedule and send you a new message each time it is due.

Can WhatsApp schedule a message to send later?

Not yet. WABetaInfo found a Scheduled Messages feature under development in early 2026, and 9to5Mac and TechRepublic reported the same builds in February 2026, but Meta has announced no release date and the feature is still not available as of October 5, 2026. If your app has no send-later button, nothing you can switch on will add one.

How far ahead can a WhatsApp message reminder be set?

The presets are 2 hours, 8 hours and 24 hours, and there is a custom option where you pick your own time. The reminder stays attached to that message, and long-pressing the message again and tapping the bell removes it.

Will other people see that I set a reminder on their message?

No. A message reminder is private to you: nobody else in the chat is told you set one. Event reminders are different by design, because the point of them is that the people invited get nudged before the event starts.

Is a WhatsApp reminder bot allowed under Meta's rules?

A tool with a specific job is. Meta's Terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform (clause 4.7, in force since January 15, 2026) prohibit providers of large language models, generative AI platforms and general-purpose AI assistants from using the platform where that technology is the primary functionality being offered, with exceptions in certain countries. A reminder service is not a general assistant, so it stays within the rules, which is also why several open-ended AI assistants stopped working inside WhatsApp during 2026.

Does a reminder from a bot cost anything to receive?

Nothing to you beyond your normal data. It costs the operator: since October 1, 2026 Meta bills the business for each delivered message beyond a free tier of 1,000 service messages per month per number. That is why a good reminder bot pauses chains you stop answering instead of sending forever, and why genuinely unlimited free tiers are rare.
